Tug Master (Casual)

Who we are

TasPorts is a state-owned company responsible for eleven Tasmanian ports and the Devonport Airport. We are responsible for the management and maintenance of essential infrastructure in Tasmania, which includes forestry terminal operations in Burnie and Bell Bay, all associated infrastructure at the Devonport Airport as well as maintenance of port berths, channels, wharves, landside assets, marine fleet and key navigational aids. We ensure the safe control and security of all major ports and deliver critical pilotage services as well as provision of towage, slipway and refuelling facilities, supply of floating plant and equipment for marine engineering projects, and construction and coastal haulage.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • command of the tug and crew
  • ensuring a safe working environment is achieved within the business operations and participating in all TasPorts HSE systems and initiatives
  • in liaison with Manager Fleet, maintain company vessels by ensuring routine maintenance and dockings are carried out in line with issued policy and instruction
  • manage and coordinate crew as required for operations and liaising with TasPorts VTS
  • ensure compliance with all relative legislative requirements
  • induction training of employees and visitors

What you need

To be successful you will must have:

  • Extensive experience with tug handling in Harbour Towage preferably with ASD tugs, vessel maintenance and crew management.
  • Excellent communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • A minimum Master < 35 metres near coastal or equivalent
  • Unrestricted drivers licence
  • Current certificate in First Aid (HLTAID003)
  • Current AMSA or MAST medical clearance
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and retain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
  • Proven ability to lead and work as part of an effective team
