The Role

AGE is seeking a Groundwater Modeller to join our Brisbane office.  Working in the Australian water and mining sectors, the purpose of this role is to tackle complex groundwater challenges by applying scientific modelling code.

As well as modelling applications, this role will assist in the planning, development and review of numerical groundwater models, working alongside a highly credentialed team of seven other groundwater modellers with these unique skills.

This is a full time, long term role with sensible work hours and a cohesive, family friendly team.



You will be a Groundwater Modeller with a minimum of postgraduate qualifications in geology, hydrogeology, mathematics or environmental engineering. Ideally, you will have at least 12 months of applied numerical modelling experience.  A Masters or PhD in hydrogeology (or associated relevant disciplines) will be highly favoured.

You will be seeking to advance your long term career in groundwater modelling, in a niche consultancy that fosters innovation.  You will have an inquisitive nature and AGE will support your investigations.  Developing Python scripts and/or FORTRAN code to interact with a 3D model will be welcomed in this role.  A working knowledge of MODFLOW-USG (or similar program) and experience with open pit, underground mining or coal seam gas processes will be a strong advantage.  

AGE’s groundwater models are typically custom-made, using in-house code to build, run and process finite difference simulations.  A GUI is rarely used, however if your background is mainly with GUIs, you will be given the tools and tutelage to acquire these advanced skills.

You will be confident to make independent decisions and report results. You will be meticulous, highly organised and a self starter.  Your innate attention to detail will ensure you interrogate every piece of data and every keystroke.

With high standard verbal and written communication skills, you will provide constructive, informative data that is appropriate to the audience. You will be comfortable engaging with clients and working as an integral part of a team.  You will be a keen collaborator, eager to build on your strong modelling competencies and develop your expertise with AGE’s specialised groundwater team. 


The Opportunities

You will be exposed to the assessment of impacts from resource projects on groundwater systems; development of groundwater supplies for towns, villages, mines, irrigation, stock, and domestic purposes; dewatering and groundwater control needs around mines and deep excavations and assessing groundwater to assist in the development, management and closure of landfills and mines.

Currently in a strong growth phase, AGE is expanding further in the coal seam gas industry as well as exploring opportunities where groundwater crosses over into ecology through groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs).

You will collaborate closely with the modelling team and will be encouraged to bring creativity to projects as we continue to carve out our niche with bespoke methods and cutting edge technology. This role includes time dedicated to research and development opportunities within AGE. 

AGE Consultants is at the forefront of groundwater modelling technology.  We specialise in the use of the MODFLOW code, and its many variations, including the latest iteration, MODFLOW-USG.   We use Voronoi mesh design and layer pinching to optimise model run times.  We also use SEEP/W and FEFLOW.

With automated optimisation software such as PEST to assist in the calibration of our models, we have our own high-performance computing cluster that speeds up the calibration process allowing many models to run simultaneously.

After experiencing consistent growth over many years, we have a very healthy pipeline of groundwater work and your contribution will be an integral part of our current and future plans.
