This full-time Senior Officer position is an exciting opportunity to develop and implement plans to enhance Council’s community engagement with its stakeholders and to ensure effective advocacy on their behalf.

Reporting to the Director Engagement and Innovation, you will lead a team of 20 in the development and delivery of effective communications across all internal and external channels. Importantly, this role will focus on increasing opportunities for meaningful engagement with the City of Stonnington’s customers and broader community.

You will be an experienced communications professional with an innovative and proactive approach. You will also possess the ability to lead a capable team in supporting the organisation’s strategic vision, values and direction.

You will be responsible for a range of Council activities including:
  • Communications and engagement projects
  • Stakeholder activities
  • Managing issues and opportunities affecting the City of Stonnington and providing strategic advice to the Mayor, Councillors, CEO and Executive team
  • Developing and maintaining communications protocols and policies
  • Working in partnership with senior staff to develop an advocacy plan and support Council’s advocacy work on behalf of its community
  • Leading and managing the Communications, Advocacy and Engagement Department
  • Ensuring the Council plan, annual reports and departmental budgets are produced on time and to statutory requirements.

  • Experience in developing effective advocacy plan
  • Strong team leadership skills and the ability to build and maintain a positive culture
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels with confidence
  • Tertiary degree qualifications in communications, journalism, public affairs or similar
  • Experience working in or with local government may be beneficial.
