ABOUT THE ROLE

The Regional Manager – ACT will oversee the broader ACT region encompassing ACT, Upper Lachlan Shire, Yass Valley Council, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, Snowy Valleys and Snowy Monaro Regional Council across all pillars of the AFL NSW/ ACT strategic plan including People, Fan & Participants, State & Community Football, Facilities, AFL Clubs and Talent.

Specifically, this position will:

  • Provide AFL leadership in the ACT region to deliver key regional priorities 
  • Develop a high-performance culture for regional staff in line with the AFL’s values and to meet outcomes the business is seeking
  • Implement AFL programs through a targeted approach to gain maximum participation levels of our key segments – Club Auskick, After-school Auskick, Community Football & AFL 9’s and implement structured school programs and competitions to build AFL awareness and interest at the base, and enhance transition to club football
  • Ensure the long-term commercial viability of the AFL’s involvement in the Philip Oval Management Group
  • Work with the AFL clubs to connect participants of the game with fan engagement activities
  • Be a positive presence for the AFL brand within a designated “hub” that delivers positive outcomes to all stakeholders
  • Oversee the effective governance and management of all junior and senior competitions in AFL Canberra 
  • Support the future growth and sustainability of local clubs and competitions including managing the AFL Canberra Strategic Advisory Committee
  • Support umpiring development, coaching and delivery across all competitions and programs
  • Act as the primary AFL NSW/ ACT lead with respect to all local government and facility development matters
  • Oversee and deliver commercial partnerships across community football and programs
  • Oversee the effective delivery of all diversity and inclusion programs and activities
  • Manage the regional budgets including AFL Canberra

 

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF 

Regional Management

  • Develop a high-performance culture for regional staff in line with the AFL’s values and to meet outcomes the business is seeking
  • Ensure that the staff structure aligns with national and State objectives
  • Empower, motivate and support regional staff to improve their performance
  • Support the management of HR and operational functions:
    • Regional Structure, Recruitment, Performance Management, Professional Development
    • Understand and promote HR policies/procedures
    • Conflict Resolution – create a harmonious and effective workplace
    • Ensure quality and appropriate level of staff to meet target outcomes

 

Strategy and Operations

  • Responsible for the development, review and maintenance of the regional strategic plan and promote implementation across the region
  • Ensure that the regional plan links with State objectives through an integrated approach with state, department leads and staff
  • Collaborate with the regional team on performance reports against agreed organisational targets and KPI’s
  • Strategic responsibility for regional game development targets and associated revenue 
  • Strategic and operational responsibility to deliver opportunities to host elite and second tier content in the region
  • Act as a member of the AFL in Canberra Strategic Advisory Committee including as secretariat of the Committee
  • Act as a member of the Phillip Oval Management Group on behalf of the AFL
  • Ensure responsibility for all strategic outcomes in the region in accordance with the state objectives/strategic pillars:
    • People: Develop and manage a high performing team in line with AFL values
    • Fans & Participants: Lead implementation of participation and strategies to grow AFL participation and fans in line with state strategy
    • Community Football: Ensure community football growth and sustainability participation through effective governance, club support, innovative structures and enhancing transition from junior to senior football; conversion from school/Auskick to community clubs; support quality club environments; growth of new teams and clubs; support umpiring development and delivery; drive commercial outcomes
    • Facilities: Identify and drive facility needs and development as well as build strong local and federal government relationships across key portfolios 
    • Talent: Support/linkages to Giants/Swans Academies and state talent pathways – across both males and females, indigenous, diversity
    • AFL Clubs: Work with AFL Clubs to develop participant to fan pathways and manage player appearances

 

State & Community Football

  • Grow community football participation through enhancing transition from junior to senior football and player retention, improving coaching standards, umpiring development and enhancing club environments 
  • Oversee the effective management of all junior and senior competitions in the ACT region including AFL Canberra   
  • Ensure the future growth and sustainability of community clubs and competitions by providing education and support to clubs to implement best practice solutions,
  • Identify the and drive the establishment of new teams, clubs and competition structures
  • Oversee club facility development opportunities to ensure sustainable club environments
  • Support umpiring development and delivery for competitions
  • Drive league commercial revenue and service partnerships
  • Support and develop the talent pathway including the relationship between the Canberra Demons and AFL Canberra clubs

 

Regional Engagement, Partnership and Events

  • Analyse ACT market to identify opportunities to grow our code Develop an understanding of the business plans of the GWS GIANTS to identify opportunities to promote and collaborate for mutual benefit (e.g. fan development opportunities).
  • Develop enhanced relationships with local media outlets as well as local councils
  • Enhance the school ambassador program and launch community and corporate ambassador programs
  • Develop a regional focus on community football to improve engagement, participation rates and the strategic creation of new clubs
  • Manage AFL Player CBA Appearances in the region, including scheduling as well as appearance type and content

 

Financial Management

  • Manage the ACT regional budget; and identify efficiencies to reduce overall costs or fund new initiatives in the region
  • Manage the AFL Canberra league budget
  • Manage the Philip Oval budget
  • Approve all invoices & conduct monthly forecasting
  • Assist in preparation of submissions to AFL NSW/ ACT for funding
