Food & Beverage Media has an outstanding opportunity for a talented editor to shape the content and direction of Australia’s leading publication serving the fast-growing craft beer scene.

 

The role

As editor, you’ll be responsible for the editorial output of the publication, both in print and online, and act as an ambassador for the title, working closely with the publisher and sales team to help drive commercial growth. You will play a key role in shaping the editorial strategy to further strengthen the title’s position within the marketplace, both in Australia and New Zealand. You will also make a leading contribution to the launch and growth of our new app, which in its final stages of development.

 

To be successful, you will already have solid editorial experience and understand how to create lively, engaging content for your readers. You will understand the market from both a consumer and trade perspective and be willing to hunt out unique stories, comment and interviews with the help of your growing contact list.

 

You will have an eye for detail and the nose for a great story; you will be highly organised and able to manage multiple projects; and since you’ll be dealing with a variety of stakeholders across several industries, you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills.

 

You duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, managing and writing the editorial content of Beer & Brewer magazine (currently four issues per year), its weekly e-newsletter and website.
  • Managing the editorial content of the new app and working with the team to promote the app to consumers, brewers and venues.
  • Contributing regular posts to the title’s social media channels while adhering to the company’s social media policy.
  • Liaising with the digital team to support growth and increased engagement of the title’s online readerships.
  • Managing a small budget to commission articles and photography for each magazine.
  • Liaising with contributors to ensure copy and images are of high quality and are submitted on time.
  • Contacting breweries to request product for tasting panels and photo shoots.
  • Liaising with the Beer & Brewer panel tasters and organising the quarterly tasting.
  • Subbing copy and sourcing images as required.
  • Liaising with the studio to discuss page design and to ensure production deadlines are met.
  • Proofing pages, making corrections and ensuring all output is accurate and polished.
  • Acting as a figurehead and ambassador for the titles, attending relevant functions and press events to boost the profile of the titles, source material for news and features and support the sales team as required.
  • Chairing/hosting some face-to-face events organised by the publication or its sister titles.
  • Developing relevant contacts and knowledge of the beer sector to further the titles’ reputation as authoritative, accurate and current.
  • Contributing ideas in conjunction with the publisher and sales team to help grow the titles commercially.
  • Responding to enquiries from readers, suppliers and other industry stakeholders as required.
  • Because of the nature of the title, the editor will be required to attend events outside of normal office hours.
  • Some interstate and international travel may be required from time to time.

 

What you’ll need:

  • A degree or other relevant qualification in journalism, media or publishing.
  • Experience of editing a title and evidence of previous written work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • An understanding of writing for digital platforms.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work among a team as well as independently.
  • Willingness to attend events outside standard working hours.
  • Knowledge of the beer industry would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of InDesign publishing software would be advantageous but is not essential.

Other information:

Working hours for this full-time role are 8.30am-5.00pm Monday to Friday, although some evening hours will be required to attend events and to ensure publications hit deadlines.
