National Security Editor


The Strategist is the commentary and analysis site of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) an independent, non-partisan think tank based in Canberra. ASPI is one of the most authoritative and widely quoted contributors to public discussion of strategic policy issues in Australia and a recognised and authoritative Australian voice in international discussion of strategic issues, especially in the Asia–Pacific.

The Strategist aims to provide fresh ideas on Australia’s critical defence and strategic policy choices as well as encourage and facilitate discussion and debate among the strategy community and Australian public.

We are looking for an experienced and credible journalist/editor to join the Strategist team as the National Security Editor. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the Australian national security landscape, be a self-starter and have the ability to work collaboratively in a small team to produce high quality and impactful pieces.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write regularly for The Strategist and contribute to the site’s timely coverage of defence and national security issues.
  • Commission and edit pieces for The Strategist and assist with daily production and management tasks
  • Undertake additional writing and research projects as determined by the Executive Director, Director of Defence and National Security and Executive Editor
  • Participate in ASPI events and activities

Selection Criteria:

Essential Qualifications:

  • appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline with strong academic achievement
  • have at least 3 years of experience working for a reputable media outlet
  • knowledge and experience working within Australia’s national security landscape
  • demonstrated ability to produce original content
  • superior writing, editing and analytical skills
  • possess good judgement and demonstrated ability to work with limited direction
  • access to extensive and diverse contacts within the national security community

Desirable Qualifications:

  • experience working as a print journalist for a major Australian newspaper, highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be offered a remuneration package at a level aligned with their demonstrated skills and expertise. This is a contract position for 2 years with possible extension.
