Purpose of the Role:

The Rolling Stock Engineer (Engineer Services) is responsible in assisting the Engineering Team for the performance of routine preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, vehicle recovery, on-call support and training of  maintenance personnel.  This role will also assist in the revision of manuals, systems, standards, maintenance regimes and technical solutions to improve the performance and reliability of the vehicles and supporting Product Introduction onsite with commissioning/testing of newly delivered vehicles.

The role is on a 11 hour shift roster and hands on to fault find issues and perform repairs.

Your key responsibilities will include the following:

Engineering / Technical Support

  • Assist Engineering team for the development, verification and application / introduction of vehicle related standards that would be relevant and applicable for specific types of rail vehicles.
  • Provide accurate fault and diagnostic data/reports to facilitate early resolution of issues

  • Assist in the development of data collection processes and procedures relating to vehicle condition, performance, reliability etc.
  • Assist in the investigation and analysis of trends in vehicle performance (defects, reliability, availability etc.).
  • Apply problem solving principles to investigate vehicle trends and perform root cause analysis.
  • Assist in the development of researched solutions to address vehicle performance trends with the aim of minimising or eliminating their reoccurrence. Such solutions may involve changes to suppliers, design, maintenance regimes etc. and will require close liaison with other functional departments such as engineering, supply management and customers.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of overhaul intervals and overhaul specifications (scope of work) for major components based on results of risk analysis, specifications, vehicle condition (i.e. condition monitoring) and financial constraints.
  • Assist in the continuous review of maintenance regime to optimise workflow, and reduce maintenance costs while satisfying safety requirements and risk.
  • Assist in the ongoing assessment and analysis of vehicle condition to ensure that the systems and appropriate actions are in place to maintain contractual compliance.
  • Provide technical reports to management and suppliers on vehicle related issues, performance and improvement initiatives.
  • Implementation and adherence to all corporate policies including OH&S and Quality.
  • Establish and maintain a harmonious working environment in which all staff, associates, suppliers and customers are encouraged to participate in decision making.
  • Develop, review and modify work instructions, procedures etc.
  • Auditing maintenance exams and other activities
  • Provide training to internal staff and external stakeholders on fault diagnosis and maintenance of equipment.
  • Consult with suppliers to resolve technical issues with the view to improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance costs.

Maintenance & Repair

  • Assist / perform preventative maintenance tasks in conformance with the approved maintenance manual.
  • Assist / perform corrective maintenance tasks in conformance with the approved technical documentation.
  • Perform fault diagnosis and identification on both the electrical and mechanical systems of the vehicle.
  • Assist in the identification and production of vehicle modification programs to improve reliability and maintainability.
  • Assist / perform vehicle modifications as required.
  • Establish, maintain and deliver training material in line with maintenance needs and ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Assist as required with the recovery of defective vehicles and the production of incident reports.
  • Liaise with the Operator on a regular basis regarding the status of the fleet to ensure maximum possible availability always.
  • Assist in the reporting of all vehicle faults and subsequent rectification to enable the monitoring of fleet performance.
  • Repair of faulty equipment as directed by suppliers.
  • Review warranty and repair information from suppliers on repaired equipment.
  • Provide on-call technical support as agreed with manager.
  • Creating and closing out of Maximo work orders.

Product Introduction (new Vehicles) & Testing / Commissioning

  • Day to day field service support to ensure vehicle is operating safely and in accordance with contract performance requirements
  • Provide technical support to the customer during warranty period
  • Provide training in the operation and maintenance of the product
  • Provide reports to management and/or customer on vehicle issues when requested
  • Manage open issues list and modification process.
  • Perform Static and Dynamic testing, continuity and insulation testing, system functionality testing of equipment on vehicles.
  • Assist in ensuring assigned tests are performed on vehicles and collate test records and other such documentation for each vehicle logbook as required.
  • Perform all testing activities with minimum supervision.
  • Communicate issues and proposed solutions internally and externally.
  • To maintain a safe working environment at all time during testing and commissioning of vehicles and within company policy
  • Provide accurate fault and diagnostic data/reports to facilitate early resolution of issues

It is expected you will have the following qualifications, experience and personal characteristics:

  • Relevant trade certificate or tertiary qualified engineer (preferably mechatronics, electrical, or electronics discipline) or previous experience as service technician in vehicle maintenance, modifications, and reliability growth management desirable.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a Rolling Stock Fleet Operational environment preferred
  • Previous experience in vehicle maintenance work
  • Understanding of technical specifications
  • A strong level of fault finding and troubleshooting experience in structural, mechanical, and electrical systems
  • Some experience and understanding of the interface between electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment on rail vehicles
  • Experience in negotiating with customers and suppliers
  • Be able to read and understand engineering and schematic drawings, sketches etc
