ESS Earth Sciences is looking for a technician to join our Production team that builds and tests environmental monitoring systems such as seismographs and water quality sensors. The role involves tasks such as the assembly of electronics modules, some basic workshop machinery operation, mechanical assembly of components, electronic testing and certification, and occasional installation of systems in the field – both in Australia and overseas. The skills required are outlined below.

Electro-mechanical Skills:

  • Understanding of low voltage power systems and connections (solar, battery, regulators)
  • Cabling skills (cable plug and socket connection/soldering)
  • Basic electronic circuit testing and debugging (reading schematics)
  • Mechanical assembly and disassembly of products using standard tools
  • Experience with PCB design is an advantage
  • Understanding of job management and parts ordering processes is an advantage
  • Field installation of equipment (indoors and outdoors) as a sole worker

IT Skills:

  • Network configuration of Windows and Linux devices using command line
  • Experience in using terminal emulators to communicate with serial devices
  • Understanding of TCP/IP communications over Ethernet and cellular data networks
  • Experience with using scientific sensors and data loggers an advantage

Other Skills:

  • Ability to produce clear written work instructions and track production information
  • Availability to travel alone throughout Australia and overseas for weeks at a time
  • Self-motivated to learn new skills to benefit the business
  • A focus on customer support and satisfaction
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Drivers license for manual transmission vehicle, off-road driving experience a bonus
