About Biripi:

Biripi Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre (Biripi ACMC) is a community controlled health service that employs up to 100 staff members which provides a wide range of culturally appropriate health and well-being services covering communities across the Mid-Northern NSW Region. These include; Clinical, Maternal Health, Aged and Community Care, Community Health and Dental Health Services from Clinics and Facilities around Taree and Statutory Out of Home Care (OOHC) through Biripi Aboriginal Children Services (BACS) in Taree and Walanbaa Gaayili in Inverell.

About the role:

We have 2 positions available - 1 x Female designated and 1 x Male designated. This position is also Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Identified.

The Aboriginal Health Worker - Drug & Alcohol/Sexual Health position is responsible for providing culturally and gender appropriate prevention, early intervention and clinical services in the area of Drug & Alcohol and Sexual Health to ensure the achievement of agreed program performance indicators and improve health outcomes for local Aboriginal people and communities.

The key objectives of the role include:

  • Ensure that drug & alcohol and sexual health education and promotional components of the program are effective and culturally appropriate
  • Assess and improve sexual health in the local Aboriginal community
  • Increase knowledge and awareness on sexual health issues
  • Increase sexual health screening and intervention
  • Increase knowledge of safe sex practices
  • Work collaboratively with General Practitioners in the support of clients with drug and alcohol misuse issues
  • Assess drug and alcohol misuse and associated harms in the local Aboriginal community
  • Design, plan and implement the Biripi drug and alcohol misuse support program and any associated harm minimisation strategies

Skills and experience

If you have:

  • Aboriginality
  • Minimum Certificate IV qualification in Aboriginal Health, Primary Health Care
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in sexual health, drug and alcohol fields or other related health areas
  • Sound knowledge of community health, public health and Aboriginal health
  • Experience working with health service agencies, non-government organisation, community groups and medical professionals at all levels
  • Ability to build relationships with all levels of the organisation and the community
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly within tight time schedules and in accordance with variable workload demands
  • Ability to hold all relevant security clearances including National Police Check and Working with Children clearance
  • Current valid Driver's license, minimum of Class "C" or equivalent
