SHINE for Kids is the only national charity in Australia that works solely to support the children and families of people involved in the criminal justice system. We work to lessen the effects of imprisonment on children and families through early intervention, support and information. We advocate for the rights of children at all levels and we believe that our services are needed now more than ever.

This role is reporting to the Northern Rivers Child and Family Manager and will be responsible for the implementing, updating and delivery of the programs.

We are seeking a flexible, passionate, enthusiastic and personable individuals to take on this role to provide exceptional support and to inmates and their families.

Job purpose

The Child and Family Coordinator Clarence Correctional Centre is responsible for delivering the following life changing programs that support children of prisoners during their parents incarceration and focus on supporting parents in custody to develop their parenting skills.

Keeping Us Together- The Keeping Us Together Parenting Program aims to enable incarcerated parents to maintain connections with or reconnect with their children and increase the likelihood of their children being reunited with their children upon release.

Rhythm2Recovery is an integrated model of practice that combines experiential rhythmic music with cognitive reflection and draws upon a number of well documented therapeutic approaches,  that deliver positive psychological and physiological outcomes. These include research on the benefits of participatory music, the vast documentation that supports cognitive behavioral therapy, and more recent studies showcasing the benefits of acceptance and commitment therapy, positive psychology and mindfulness.

Keeping Us Strong –  An extend version of the Keeping Us Together Program the Keeping us Strong program repairs and nurtures the child-parent bond and empowers parent in custody to reflect on their parenting journey and goals post release.

Both programs uses the evidenced based parenting program Bringing Up Great Kids, mindfulness and reflection to help parents in custody examine and improve their communication with children so that they may foster more positive interactions which support children’s development and positive identity. 

Storytime Program- This program is designed to increase literacy skills and child/parent bonding for incarcerated parents and their children. The activity includes maintaining contact between parent and child/ren in an interactive positive way by having the opportunity to do a very important parenting role and that is, to be able to read a story to their child/ren.

Your paperwork

  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education Care,  Criminology or Community Services
  • Current Working with Children Check (Paid)
  • Our organisation undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children in its care. This includes reference checks, Identity check, qualification checks, Criminal History Records Check (where applicable) and professional registration checks.
  • You will required to complete Mandatory Drug and Alcohol testing
  • Current Drivers Licence
