Purpose of position 

Our Consultants play a critical role in contributing to the success and evolution of Catalyze as a growing boutique management consultancy.  

Our Consultants are responsible for: 

  • Delivering services that support our client engagements 

  • Supporting our Principal consultants and Directors 

  • Contributing to the growth and evolution of Catalyze. 

We are looking for motivated and capable people to join our growing team as either Canberra-based or Wellington-based consultants.

In this role your key relationships will be with: 

  • clients and their representatives 

  • potential/prospective clients or referrers  

  • Catalyze’s Sydney, Canberra and Wellington-based staff: our CEO, our NZ Director and our Canberra Director  

  • Catalyze UK staff 

What we expect a Consultant to do 

As a Consultant you will work with clients at a senior level in the government and corporate sectors, supporting and contributing to the design and delivery of tailored decision-making processes, including customised training programmes.  

You’ll have responsibilities for: 

  • planning, supporting and contributing to, client meetings, written and verbal communications 

  • working with Catalyze colleagues on all aspects of client engagements from scope definition to delivery, and in particular supporting the successful delivery of client workshops 

  • providing analytical support, from analysing data to configuring Catalyze software tools, to meet the requirements of clients and colleagues 

  • conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of data for inclusion into client briefings, workshops and reports 

  • supporting business development in Australia and New Zealand, including supporting proposal development 

  • supporting Catalyze Knowledge investment activities, including capturing process design, developing operation procedures, etc. 

  • supporting client training activities, including developing training materials, planning training activities and contributing to training delivery 

  • consistently achieving the highest possible standard of work. 

Your work at Catalyze will generally involve: 

  • working with senior consultants to help clients define their situation and the problems they need to address, including understanding and eliciting their requirements 

  • supporting the planning of processes to make decisions and documenting process design 

  • planning and helping co-ordinate Catalyze projects 

  • supporting clients to prepare material for decision processes 

  • supporting client workshops 

  • building decision models  

  • analysing workshop outputs  

  • producing written reports and presentations to clients – including proposals for new work 

  • supporting clients to create briefings and other documentation such as business cases 

Key Requirements/Competencies 

To succeed in this role, you will need to have strong analytical skills and a real interest in strategy and organisational processes. You will be equally interested in both the technical and quantitative side of our work, as well as the social/group process side of successful consulting.  

Essential requirements: 

  • Client-focussed, with the ability to listen and ask astute questions. 

  • Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to analyse, understand and explain quantitative data. You must be highly numerate. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong relationship management skills. 

  • Solid communication skills, both written and verbal. 

  • Competent with the Microsoft suite of products – i.e. Word, PowerPoint, and in particular aptitude with Microsoft Excel for organising, collecting and analysing data. 

  • Solid organisational and time management skills, with an ability to prioritise your workload, multi-task and participate in multiple projects at once. 

  • Suitability to hold and maintain a security clearance in the relevant country (i.e. Australia or New Zealand).  

Other desirable but non-essential attributes are: 

  • demonstrable business skills, with the ability to apply these in a workshop environment  

  • business acumen and commercial awareness 

  • project management skills and experience 

  • presentation and facilitation skills 

  • an existing security clearance in the relevant country (i.e. Australia or New Zealand).

Qualifications and Experience 

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is essential 

  • Knowledge and experience of one or more of the following would be advantageous:   

  • Enterprise Portfolio Management 

  • Portfolio Prioritisation 

  • Decision Science (multi-criteria analysis)  

  • Relevant Government agencies and Australian or New Zealand Public Sector. 

  • A post grad qualification is desirable  

Please note: Catalyze will provide the training in our subject-matter expertise, in particular Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Decision Thinking.  

Confidentiality and Security 

Everyone at Catalyze is expected to maintain high ethical standards and fully comply with client confidentiality requirements for all assignments.  

This role requires you to have the ability to obtain and maintain an Australian or New Zealand high-level national security clearance to meet certain clients’ requirements.  Ideally, you will already have a clearance of this nature.  If not, you should be aware the clearance process will require you to provide authorisation to obtain a significant amount of personal information including any criminal history.
