Summary of Position

The Museum of Chinese Australia is a new museum that will be housed in the former Haymarket Library at 744 George St, Sydney. 

The Executive Director (ED) is a key member of the leadership team with responsibilities for the implementation of the strategic plan for the organisation. This includes responsibility for the operation and performance of functions that include finance; fundraising, business systems and reporting; marketing; and facilities planning. 

The successful applicant is able to work closely with the Board of Directors to to lead and implement the strategic planning efforts of the Museum.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the execution and continued development of the components for a strategic plan, business plan and fundraising plan.
  • Project manage any identified key initiatives that assist with the establishment of the Museum.
  • Develop and maintain business systems and processes (including technology systems) as required to set up a new Museum.
  • Directs the Museum’s pre-opening operations, including supervising any volunteers.
  • Assist in creating a strong financial backbone – balanced budgets, sufficient cash reserves, grant applications and financial management.
  • Supervise and coordinate facilities, planning, maintenance, improvement and expansions.
  • Supervise and coordinate periodic financial and operating reports to the Board.
  • Manage proposals, negotiations and contracts with third parties in relation to establishment of the Museum.
  • Assess the several risks that impact the operation and assets of the Museum.
  • Supervise legal matters on behalf of the Museum.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

  • Ability to provide strong leadership and strategic direction. Experience developing (with a board of directors) and implementing strategic plans.
  • Excellent planning, time management and communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and team interaction skills; ability to work with a diverse community.
  • Broad project management and problem skills especially with regards to start-up situation.
  • Experience in the areas of financial development and management including fundraising, budget preparation and administration.
  • Display the capacity to supervise, motivate and work effectively with different stakeholders including the Board, staff, volunteers, members and the general public.
  • Must be a team player with experience working across NFPs or community-based organisations.
  • Ability to creatively provide solutions to problems while making and implementing decisions quickly and soundly.
  • Ability to assimilate a high volume of information across disciplines and departments, providing leadership and support to senior staff and  experts in each of those disciplines.
  • The ideal candidate would have at least 5 years of experience at an executive or senior managerial level.
  • Experience in or with museums, arts or non-profit organizations a plus.
  • Appreciation of the history of the contribution of the Chinese in Australia.


  • Minimum education requires a Bachelor’s degree
  • Ten years of experience at executive level of management involving operational and financial disciplines with at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in administration, community relations and fundraising is required


  • Flexible working arrangements including space at Haymarket HQ (63-69 Dixon St, Haymarket)
