Senior Lighting Technician

This is an exciting 6-month fixed term contract (part time-3 days per week) for an experienced and skilled Lighting Technician. 

The Position

We are looking for a Senior Lighting Technician with sound operator and leadership capabilities to support the HOTA Technical department.

All Technicians are expected to deliver services in a professional, safe and efficient manner whilst always supporting a cohesive team environment.

The Team 

The Technical Department is an in-house team delivering full facilities for traditional style theatre productions, corporate functions, outdoor productions & events across a range of versatile venues. The Department is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day technical operations of the precinct are delivered at the highest level and to industry standard. 

The department will also provide a level of shared services to the HOTA Gallery; a AAA rated gallery designed to present art indoors and out, making HOTA a must-see cultural destination.

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the lighting department operationally by facilitating activities for incoming professional and non-professional organisations at HOTA.  Activities may range from MA Lighting board operation, lighting design development & execution, resource preparation, stakeholder meetings (internal and external).
  • To undertake specialised lighting tasks and functions, in known or changing contexts relating to live theatre, entertainment and corporate event delivery.
  • To provide strong supervision, leadership, guidance and support for all casual & freelance staff in the running of events whilst always maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Be responsible for the quantity, quality, outputs and professionalism of the work you deliver
  • Hold responsibilities for the organisation and output of others in a team;
  • To ensure the proper use, care and first line maintenance of all HOTA equipment including regular input in continuous improvement of policy’s and procedures to ensure relevance and compliance
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service and effective communication
  • To keep all production areas in a safe, clean and tidy condition and to positively drive the housekeeping standards of HOTA.
  • To understand, adopt and comply with all HOTA WH&S procedures and operational policies to ensure HOTA service delivery is of the highest safety standards.
  • To bring a collaborative approach to interactions with both clients and colleagues and always lead by example to reflect the values of HOTA. 

Commitment to and the flexibility to work hours as determined by the business across a 7-day roster. This may include working evenings, night work and weekends.  

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working in a busy, flexible, multi venue facility
  • Proven technical skills relevant to lighting and LED systems
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies with a desire to develop technical skills across a range of work areas (eg AAA rated Gallery tech operations)
  • Extensive professional experience in set up, operation and system specification
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work autonomously and as a team member
  • Experience of leading technical staff and ability to self-motivate to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic with high standards of professionalism
  • Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety standards within the entertainment industry
  • Experience of working with a variety of stakeholders and providing excellent customer service skills and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to manage under pressure and work to targets and tight deadlines. 
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Fitness to work in what is a physically demanding position including working at  heights. Safe lifting and movement of heavy objects is an inherent requirement of the position and therefore the applicant is required to be physically fit. This position will require frequent bending, twisting, squatting, reaching, gripping, standing, walking, lifting (up to 30kg – utilizing correct manual handling techniques / two person lifts / using trolleys etc), carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping
  • HR license / Rigging, forklift, EWP blue card, restricted electrical training, first aid certificate, drawing capabilities (Vectorworx) are an advantage
