Scientific Officer - Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis

The Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM - https://cmm.centre.uq.edu.au) operates world class facilities for natural and man-made material characterisation equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentations and techniques in electron, laser and X-ray and ions probes for imaging and spectroscopy. The Centre has a wide range of cutting edge instruments and techniques including conventional and cryo electron microscopes (SEM, TEM), Cs corrected STEM, X-ray analysis and imaging methods, ion and mass spectrometry imaging, electron based nano-fabrication tools as well sample preparation facilities for material and life science and data processing workflows. The Centre provides leading edge capability in microstructural analysis to researchers across a broad range of disciplines at The University of Queensland.

The Centre’s strengths lie in training clients in relevant techniques and in solving characterisation problems relevant to a wide range of industrial, material, environmental and biological processes

About This Opportunity

To support the Centre’s Material Sciences Team by providing training in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Advanced SEM techniques and SEM relevant instruments to its clients, as well as assisting clients with the preparation and processing of specific samples as stipulated by the Lab Manager.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

You will have a degree in Material Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Engineering or similar combined with subsequent relevant experience in SEM and some Advanced SEM (e.g. FE-SEM, LowVac-SEM, Cryo-SEM, EDX, EBSD, etc.).

You will need the ability of general maintenance as well as sound knowledge of SEM, Advanced SEM and SEM relevant instruments, with their applications in a diverse range of fields (e.g. biology, metallurgy, geology, medicine, etc.) and the ability to communicate them to users either in a group setting or through individual training.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time continuing position at HEW level 6.  

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $80,784 - $86,768 plus super of up to 17% and recreation leave loading of 17.5%. The total FTE package will be in the range $94,517 - $101,519.
