Chief Engineer - Plantation Island Resort

Plantation Island Resort covers 553 acres and is located on the island of Malolo Lailai in the Mamanuca Group of Islands, less than one hour by boat from Nadi. 

The Plantation Island Resort Chief Engineer role is an island-based position, reporting to the General Manager.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for effective day to day management of a local team of 30+ tradesmen and labourers, with a strong focus on developing the practical skills and knowledge of your team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing the Engineering department through implementation of actions and initiatives that drive achievement of the company’s vision and mission and reflect the company values.
  • Assisting the General Manager in establishing annual and long-term strategic plans relevant to the resort infrastructure and refurbishment.
  • Planning, implementing and project managing the resort’s developments, renovations and expansions.
  • Forecasting required CAPEX and manage project costs against approved budgets.
  • Ensuring that all guest related maintenance works are prioritised and effectively completed.
  • Ensuring that effective energy conservation programmes and relative compliance and reporting programmes are in place and any exceptions or non-compliance rectified effectively in the shortest possible time.
  • Ensuring that all hazardous works are carried out and equipped within national safety regulations and any exceptions reported according to OHS policies and legislation.
  • Ensuring that resort grounds, gardens and landscaped areas are presented in an attractive, clean and tidy condition throughout the year while ensuring compliance with environmental and health and safety regulations.
  • Implementing and managing costs containment strategies to reduce operational inefficiencies in utilities, wastes, transport and equipment etc, and to maximise cost saving opportunities.
  • Ensuring an effective vehicle maintenance and replacement programme is in place and complied with.
  • Ensuring that all preventative maintenance undertakings are completed as scheduled.
  • Ensuring safe waste disposal methods and promote/implement green initiative measures.
  • Mentoring, developing and leading the Engineering team to increase practical knowledge, workplace application and trouble-shooting skill levels across all trades.
  • Encouraging and maintaining a customer focused work environment that fosters mutual respect, trust, motivation, cooperation, empowerment and teamwork.
  • As required, provide oversight and technical leadership to the Engineering team at our sister property, Lomani Island Resort, located adjacent to Plantation Island Resort.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on, experienced Resort or Hotel Chief Engineer who is a proactive facilities manager.

You will need to demonstrate influential leadership and preferably have managed teams in an island or remote location.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 5 years' senior leadership experience in managing an Engineering team of at least 30 team members (including Grounds) in a mid to large scale resort or hotel facility, preferably with island and remote experience in Fiji or a similar tourism destination
  • A thorough working knowledge of building and industry codes
  • Previous experience with desalination and sewage treatment plants
  • Preferably have a Degree in Engineering, Project Management or a related field
  • A demonstrated high level of integrity and proven leadership capabilities in nurturing a passionate and high performing results-oriented team
