Journalist
with flair and motivation to succeed
The new year brings with it an opportunity for an experienced journalist with the confidence and motivation to become Senior Journalist at The Longreach Leader.
This full-time position requires a person with at least three years’ newsroom experience (preferably a grade three or four), have experience across all sections of a newspaper, is able to become part of a very friendly and accepting community and to be able to listen to and understand the basis of the community’s foundation.
The successful candidate will have the ability to generate stories that will gain the following and respect of the readership. Importantly, he or she will possess strong news judgement and have the ability to guide editorial policy while upholding strong editorial standards, and present stories in a factual and unbiased manner. Working in a regional, thriving town requires the ability to build strong relationships and be able to negotiate a diverse range of contacts.
Contributors (stringers) provide news from outlying areas. From time to time you will visit these areas to meet the locals and gain a full understanding of how they live and work together.
Attention to established editorial style is essential, as you will be working with the most modern publishing programs (InDesign Creative Suite). A knowledge of these publishing programs will be highly regarded.
You will have a high level of accuracy, ability to work independently, and have a current valid driver’s licence.
Longreach, the major centre in the Central West region of Queensland, has daily flights to Brisbane, twice-weekly flights to Townsville and north Queensland, and the Spirit of the Outback passenger trains travels between Brisbane and Longreach twice weekly.
There are two primary schools and one secondary, a vibrant shopping centre plus clubs, pubs and restaurants.
There are residents who tell of how they came for a short time and remain in the Central West many years later.
