Trainee - Aboriginal Health Worker

 (24 month full time position based in Gladstone)


Gladstone Region Aboriginal and Islander Community Controlled Health Service (GRAICCHS) trading as Nhulundu Health Service, is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service delivering an integrated, comprehensive primary health care service to the whole Gladstone community.


GRAICCHS provides bulk billing GP services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of Gladstone Regional Council area and Banana Shire, offering chronic disease management, antenatal and postnatal care, immunisation programs, women's and men's health, health promotion and prevention programs, aged care and community support service functions.



The Traineeship is a structured program that focuses on the development of candidates into being qualified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners through a combination of study and on the job training with support and mentoring.   


The accredited course of study will require you to enrol in and complete a Certificate IV Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice) with CQU. 

You will undertake course based training sessions with self-directed learning and your supervised on the job activities will consolidate your learnings with practical experience. 

The Certificate IV is a nationally accredited qualification that will take 24 months to complete.

Key Duties include:

  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Assist in education and prevention programs to improve individual and community health outcomes
  • Assist with all clinic practices and procedures
  • Undertake basic health assessments and screenings, including observations, assessments and treatments
  • Assist with health checks and client support
  • Support clients in understanding their health care needs and plans
  • Enter any recalls and reminders issuing from the consultation into the electronic health record system


What we are looking for

  • Be committed to complete a two (2) year traineeship and be willing to participate in all aspects of on-the-job training as well as complete the requirements of the Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care – Practice
  • Desire and passion to participate in improving the health and wellbeing of Community
  • Be able to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and possess well developed interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Good communication and computer skills, attention to detail and work ethic



  • GRAICCHS provides an excellent working environment and conditions
  • Full time employment ( 40 hours per week with a monthly RDO), for maximum term of 2 years
  • Ongoing employment dependent on satisfactory completion of Certificate IV and performance on the job
  • Ability to undergo and attain Federal Police check
  • Ability to apply for and gain Positive Notice Blue Card – working with children
  • Salary – pay will be in line with Award Trainee wages (variable based on age/experience) for the duration of the traineeship
