Education Officer 

An exciting opportunity for an experienced Primary or Secondary teacher to join our Education Team. 

This is a 0.6 – 1.0 FTE position for a 12 month fixed term contract, commencing Term 1, 2022, with possible extension.  The salary is to be commensurate with teaching experience and qualifications. 

The Literature Centre is seeking an exemplary teacher to join our team of Education Officers. The successful applicant will be a passionate advocate for children’s and young adult literature, with expertise in the areas of visual literacy and writing. The role may be suited to experienced Primary teachers, Secondary English and teacher-librarians or those with Visual Arts with a minimum of 5 years recent classroom experience. 

The position requires a teacher who has the ability or the desire to teach from PP-12 and includes some travel away from the metropolitan area for up to five days at a time each term. 

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to foster positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, staff, members of the community and the authors and illustrators who work with the Centre. Prior experience in designing and presenting professional learning for teachers is extremely desirable.  

We are seeking an educator who is highly collaborative, flexible and adaptable to a range of teaching situations.  The range of duties that this role requires (but is not limited to) includes:

  • the design and delivery of interactive visual literacy workshops within the exhibitions of original art for children’s and young adult picture books for students from PP-12, both at the Centre and in rural and metropolitan schools
  • design and delivery of a range of writing workshops for students Year 4-12
  • design and delivery of professional learning for teachers and preservice teachers related to children’s and young adult literature
  • assisting in the delivery of sessions in the Centre’s Young Writers Program and liaising with authors 
  • participating in out of hours events at the Centre

Selection Criteria:

The applicant must demonstrate:

  • Passion and expertise in the area of children’s and young adult literature including a strength and interest in critical and visual literacy
  • Exemplary teaching practice, including an ability to tailor teaching material to suit varying contexts and incorporating relevant aspects of the West Australian Curriculum
  • Capacity to initiate, design and deliver innovative programs for diverse audiences
