Position title: Program Director 

Location: Barton, Canberra 

Salary range: $113 057 - $119 208 (+10% super) 

Reporting to: CEO IPAA ACT 

Direct reports: 3 

Job type: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) 

Term: 12-24 months (with option to extend) 

About You 

As part of the IPAA ACT leadership team, you will motivate and lead a small team to deliver an exceptional program for IPAA ACT members to build capability and professionalism across the public sector. Reporting to the CEO, you will work closely in consultation and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Using your well-honed skills of persuasion, initiative and problem solving, you will craft and deliver a varied program including capability programs and events to engage, inspire and enhance the public sector.  

You will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, making connections with people, and working towards shared goals. You will be adaptive to change, willing to trial and test new approaches, and have a commitment to excellence. Your poise, professionalism and empathetic communication style will enable you to achieve results with others. 

IPAA ACT offers flexible working arrangements, to be managed under the guidance of the CEO and in consultation with the IPAA Team. 

 About IPAA 

IPAA is the professional body focused on the promotion of excellence and professionalism in public administration. We are a non-profit and non-partisan organisation that works in partnership with the public sector, the private sector, academia and other institutions, to provide a platform for debate and discussion about improving public administration in Australia.  

The IPAA ACT team is a small but highly engaged group who deliver high quality events and capability programs while enjoying a strong sense of camaraderie and support. We are driven by a sense of purpose and our contribution is well-respected across the sector.

Statement of Responsibilities 

The role of the Program Director is to design and deliver a contemporary suite of programs and events to support capability and excellence in public administration. This will include: 

  • Leadership and development of a small team 
  • Delivering concurrent projects with competing priorities 
  • Program design, implementation, and evaluation  
  • Building strong stakeholder relationships across the public sector 
  • Briefing and advice to IPAA ACT Board, Council, Senior Executives across the public sector, including with Secretaries and Ministers’ offices 

Skills required: 

  • Experience leading and motivating a small, empowered and dynamic team across multiple locations to deliver a program of work 
  • Exceptional stakeholder and engagement skills, including with the most senior leaders across the public sector 
  • A genuine interest in and understanding of the issues facing a contemporary public sector 
  • Experience in capability program management, and/or event management  
  • Problem solving using creativity, pragmatism and collaboration 
  • An enthusiastic and empathetic approach to relationship building 
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects, resources and suppliers to deliver on time and on budget 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality under pressure
