The role

Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor and President and as a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s senior team, the Director, Corporate Communications and Government Relations is responsible for developing and executing the strategic communications plan for the University, with both an internal and external communication portfolio, in addition to overseeing government relations activities on behalf of the University. The role requires someone who can influence and drive positive change, and develop, implement, monitor and evaluate various strategies to ensure successful outcomes for Federation University. With a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement, this role will suit an accomplished and well networked Director of Communications with a strong understanding of government relations in what will prove to be an exciting year in 2022 and beyond.
The Director, Corporate Communications and Government Relations is a pivotal role to ensure the ongoing reputational success of Federation University. With a base in Ballarat and a fully flexible work environment (hybrid-work model), the role will require the following:
  • ability to lead high performing teams;
  • strategic planning and execution across both internal and external communications;
  • a commercially astute government relations professional with established networks;
  • ability to provide in-depth strategic communications advice to the executive, and directly to the Vice-Chancellor;
  • demonstrated understanding of the issues and challenges within the Australian higher education sector and those faced by a multi-sector university;
  • exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • experience in complex stakeholder management and engagement, including negotiation and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders including media;
  • post-graduate qualifications in media, journalism, communications or similar fields.
