Why study this course

This program prepares students for the surveying profession. Students learn to use specialised equipment and software that will allow them to work on a diverse variety of projects from land subdivision and mining exploration, to tunnel building and major construction. The first two years cover general aspects of surveying and mapping. Students then study specific fields such as cadastral and engineering surveying, GPS positioning, geodesy, survey network design, land development, geographic information systems, remote sensing, photogrammetry, environmental studies, professional practice and business studies. These are supplemented by specialised higher-level surveying subjects. The course focuses on practical skills through field exercises, survey camps, and 12 weeks of professional experience prior to graduation.

All of the course content was relevant to the surveying industry. The best thing is that RMIT University gives you hands on experience so that you are better prepared when you go into the work force. An example includes setting up the tripods and actually conducting title re-establishments and feature surveys.

I didn’t realise there would be so much statistics involved, I did about one stats course per semester. I’m 3 years out of uni and struggled to get a full time job as employers either saw me as ‘overqualified’ for basic admin jobs and ‘under qualified’ for just about everything else. Units were hit or miss- some I really enjoyed others not so much.
