Is this qualification right for me?

What will I learn?

The core units you complete will prepare you to care for people who may require support due to ageing, disability or another reason. To prepare for the workplace, you will be required to complete 120 hours of supervised work placement where you'll learn how to work with diverse people in their homes or in a community setting. You'll also learn how to develop individualised plans that support independence and wellbeing, deliver care in a palliative setting and support people with dementia. The electives you complete will depend on the institution you choose to study with.

Are there any entry requirements?

Typically, there are no educational prerequisites for this course, however most institutions will require you to provide up-to-date Influenza and COVID-19 vaccination records and also be 18 years of age or older. Some institutions may set their own requirements for entry, which could include meeting set literacy and numeracy standards.

Where will it lead me?

This course prepares you for roles that provide support to vulnerable people in the home and/or community, such as an Individual Support Worker, Personal Carer, Aged Care Worker or Disability Support Worker. Depending on the institution, you may have the option to specialise in ageing or disability or gain the skills to work across both sectors.

How much will it cost?

The final cost of this course will depend on a number of factors including your personal circumstances, previous experience and unit selections. As a general guide, if you are eligible for a subsidised place, it's likely to cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Most TAFEs do offer a concession rate, in which case, you could pay as little as $400. Alternatively, if you are required to pay a full fee, it could cost up to $8,000. To find the course price for you, it's best to contact the institution directly.
