Studying at ANU is the most incredible thing that has ever happened to my life. ANU is full of knowledge, and it prepares you for the industry. ANU is full of opportunities as well. Thank you.

The material explored and the teaching approach was very narrow. It worked for a section of the student population but not for many others including me. The course seemed to be designed only for people with many prior years of performance and an understanding of the cultural expectations. Within my performance minor there was little opportunity to perform and practice with others built consistently into the course. Since this was not well synthesized into the syllabus it meant if you had a smaller social circle you were at a huge disadvantage as well as if you had any form of social anxiety. I felt there should have been pre-allocated groups that you would be required to rehearse with on a weekly basis. This would have been a huge benefit for me. I had personally not been in similar ensembles before so it was a difficult learning curve with little to no support. I barely got to perform or play with others at all and when I did it was unnecessarily stressful and much of the students were left to educate each other on etiquette which often varied person to person. I also felt we should have rotated the instrumental/vocal teachers we had for 1:1 tutoring. This would have expanded our understanding and helped students find a teaching style that resonated with them. In other areas of the degree there were also many frustrating gaps. We didn’t learn enough about musical history, the only course with some breadth was cut before I could enroll. Within my composition major I felt we lacked tactile learning experiences. Perhaps it wasn’t viable but it would have been helpful if performance students were more accessible and the courses more integrated so we could have had regular collaborations between majors - e.g. hearing our pieces played by instrumentalists or even having the opportunity to work with them whilst writing the piece.

It was awesome! It covered both the fundamentals and transitioned us to advanced level of analytical thinking. I think thats the take away from doing this course. Opening fixed set minds to growth mindsets. So good!
