What's it like to be a Caterer?
Caterers are individuals who prepare food to be served in establishments such as restaurants, cafes and canteens. They may also prepare food for functions like weddings, funerals, conferences or business events. Caterers are usually individuals with a strong interest in food who are very organised, work well under pressure and are happy to work outside office hours. Caterers may work in a variety of settings including hotels, hospitals, catering organisations, schools, canteens, restaurants and clubs.
Tasks and duties
- Consulting with clients and chefs to plan a suitable menu based on occasion, budget and dietary requirements.
- Practising safe food handling in the preparation, plating and serving of food.
- Managing staff hiring, training and rostering in order to ensure kitchen and wait staff are competent.
How to become a Caterer
It’s possible to become a Caterer without formal qualifications, however experience and/or food and hospitality qualifications are usually highly regarded by employers.
- 1.Investigate undertaking a course in kitchen operations and food preparation, such as a Certificate III in Catering (SIT30921).
- 2.If you will be serving alcohol in your role as a caterer, you need to be at least 18 years of age and hold a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. When you’ve successfully completed your training, you’ll receive an RSA certificate and can then apply for your RSA photo competency card.
- 3.There are many career pathways that a Caterer can pursue, such as undertaking further culinary training or specialising in particular events such as conventions or weddings.
