What's it like to be a Dermatologist?
A Dermatologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating diseases or infections affecting skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands, and mucus membranes. Examples of conditions Dermatologists may treat include eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer.
Tasks and duties
- Diagnosing and treating skin cancer, skin diseases and infections.
- Providing advice on skin conditions and treatments.
- Carrying out skin grafts and laser treatments.
- Performing cosmetic treatments.
How to become a Dermatologist
Becoming a Dermatologist requires many years of formal training. You will need to complete a medical degree and extensive postgraduate training before you can become certified in the field.
- 1.Complete an accredited medical degree such as a Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine. This typically takes 6 years of full-time study. Alternatively, if you have already completed an undergraduate degree, you may be able to complete a Doctor of Medicine. This typically takes 4 years of full-time study.
- 2.Undertake 1 year of post-degree medical experience in a hospital as an intern before registering as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia.
- 3.Complete at least 1 year of training as a Resident and gain broad exposure to different disciplines including general medicine and surgery.
- 4.Apply to The Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD) to undertake a 4-year practical training program under the supervision of practising Dermatologists.
- 5.Successful trainees will be admitted to Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD).
