What's it like to be a Director Of Nursing?
Directors of Nursing play a key role in the healthcare sector, managing teams of nurses who are on the frontline of hospitals and medical clinics. The main aim of a Director of Nursing is to ensure a high standard of patient care, creating training programs and managing nursing staff to achieve patient care objectives.
Tasks and duties
- Recruiting, training and supervising nursing staff.
- Overseeing budgets and managing patient data and records.
- Making high-level decisions on patient care and maintaining high quality of care within the nursing department.
- Acting as a point of contact between nursing staff and all other health consultants.
- Keeping up to date with current developments in nursing practice and healthcare policy, to ensure best practice patient care is delivered.
- Coordinating nursing rosters to ensure adequate staffing to deliver high-quality nursing care.
How to become a Director Of Nursing
To become a Director of Nursing you need to qualify as a Registered Nurse (RN). To become a Registered Nurse, you need a Bachelor of Nursing or a Bachelor of Science (Majoring in Nursing). Some facilities may prefer a master’s degree, either in Nursing or in an administrative field such as Public Health or Business Administration.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in the field of nursing. This could be a Bachelor of Nursing or a Bachelor of Science (Majoring in Nursing). Alternatively, you may complete a Nursing (Graduate Entry) qualification. This is a two-year degree for students with previous tertiary qualifications.
- 2.Apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practice as a Registered Nurse. Registration must be renewed annually to practice in Australia.
- 3.Once you have two years or more experience under your belt, you can then apply to study a postgraduate degree such as a Master of Health Administration (MHA), a degree that allows you to combine full-time work with study.
