What's it like to be a Hydrologist?
Hydrologists study the movement of water across and through the earth’s crust. They analyse the quantity and quality of water in rivers, lakes, dams, aquifers and sewage supplies, working to improve water conservation and water supply quality.
Tasks and duties
- Measuring the properties of bodies of water, such as volume and flow.
- Using computer software to forecast issues such as water supply, pollution, erosion or drought.
- Collecting and analysing samples to verify automatically generated data.
- Analysing data to provide guidance in matters of water resource management.
- Studying public water supply issues, including flood and drought risks, water quality and wastewater.
- Preparing and presenting reports to clients and stakeholders.
- Planning and overseeing hydrogeological investigations.
- Installing, calibrating and monitoring equipment used to monitor water levels, water flow, rainfall and sediment.
How to become a Hydrologist
A bachelor degree in science is usually required to become a Hydrologist, such as the Bachelor of Science (Hydrology).
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree such as the Bachelor of Science (Hydrology). Prerequisites may include completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent), and assumed knowledge or required units in mathematics, environmental science, biology, chemistry, physics and English.
- 2.Consider completing the Graduate Diploma in Science (Groundwater Hydrology) or a Master of Science (Groundwater Hydrology).
- 3.Consider joining a professional association, such as the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH).
