What's it like to be a Motor Trimmer?
Motor Trimmers install, repair, modify and replace interior fittings of vehicles including seats, upholstery, floor coverings and armrests. They may work on vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, caravans and boats. Motor Trimmers tend to be individuals who enjoy manual tasks, are detail-oriented and have good hand-eye coordination. Having an interest in furniture manufacturing is important and many Motor Trimmers are employed by automotive repair or crash repair companies, transport upholstering companies and companies that build or repair marine craft.
Tasks and duties
- Removing worn, damaged and old fittings or covers from vehicles.
- Interpreting product specifications, plans and measurements in order to install new fittings.
- Making templates and patterns for new fittings, selecting and cutting material to size before installing new trim.
How to become a Motor Trimmer
To work as a Motor Trimmer, you’ll usually need to have completed an apprenticeship or traineeship in a related field. Employers generally require the successful completion of Year 10.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in motor trimming, such as a Certificate III in Automotive and Marine Trimming Technology (AUR32320).
- 2.Depending on your workplace and the state where you live, it’s likely that you’ll need a driver’s licence and a motor vehicle repair licence.
- 3.Motor Trimmers can choose to specialise in particular vehicles, such as working on boats and becoming a marine upholsterer.
