What's it like to be a Weighbridge Operator?
Weighbridge Operators determine the weight and mass of a vehicle. They commonly work in the agricultural industry in bulk loading at farms, mills and terminals to check the weight of vehicles. They may also operate a public weighbridge which is open for use by the public, generally for a charge.
Tasks and duties
- Accurately weighing all incoming and outgoing vehicles, via use of weighbridge software.
- Ensuring compliance with laws, regulations and licences.
- Ensuring accurate and comprehensive documentation, cash sales management and record keeping.
- Using a two-way radio for communication to co-ordinate all trucks and loading points.
- Processing orders via email and phone.
- Coordinating and scheduling the delivery of vehicles.
- Generating customer invoices, statements, purchase orders and supplier payments.
- Assisting customers with enquiries.
- Maintaining databases and spreadsheets as required.
- Assisting with general administrative duties.
How to become a Weighbridge Operator
You don’t need any formal qualifications to become a Weighbridge Operator, however a qualification in administration or relevant experience may be beneficial. A licence is required to operate a public weighbridge.
- 1.Build skills in administration by completing a qualification such as a Certificate III in Business (Administration) (BSB30120) or through experience in a freight, allocation or logistics role.
- 2.Consider gaining a White Card which may be preferred by some employers.
- 3.If you are interested in operating a public weighbridge, apply for a Public Weighbridge Licence. Public weighbridge operators need to complete recognised training from the National Measurement Institute and hold a statement of attainment.
