What's it like to be a Windscreen Fitter?
Windscreen Fitters (also known as Automotive Glaziers) are responsible for fixing and replacing windscreens and glass in vehicles such as cars and trucks. Windscreen Fitters usually work for auto repair companies and replacement specialists. Some Windscreen Fitters may specialise in tinting or installing or converting sunroofs in vehicles. The work is usually conducted in a workshop, but some windscreen fitters may travel to different locations with a mobile service unit.
Tasks and duties
- Removing damaged glass, moulds, seals and trim from window frames in vehicles.
- Installing and fitting glass (either pre-shaped or cut with a template) according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Undertaking safety assurance measures to ensure windscreen, side and rear glass is safe and secure.
How to become a Windscreen Fitter
You do not usually need formal qualifications to work as a Windscreen Fitter, however experience in a trade or having a mechanical background can help secure employment.
- 1.Look for opportunities to gain experience as a trainee Window Fitter. Employers usually prefer someone with experience and/or passion for automotive vehicles.
- 2.Consider completing training in a related field, such as a Traineeship Certificate III in Automotive Glazing Technology (AUR32220).
- 3.A current manual drivers’ licence is usually required for a role as a windscreen fitter.
