What's it like to be a Sterilisation Technician?
Sterilisation Technicians sterilise, disinfect and package surgical instruments, linen and other materials used in medical facilities, preparing them for use in surgeries and patient care.
Tasks and duties
- Loading materials for processing.
- Operating sterilisation machines, setting controls and fixing attachments to machines.
- Cleaning and disinfecting re-usable surgical instruments, medical devices and equipment.
- Unloading, packaging and storing medical materials.
Sterilisation Technicians play an important role in protecting against the spread of infection in hospitals. They typically work in public and private health care and associated industries.
How to become a Sterilisation Technician
You can work as a Sterilisation Technician without formal qualifications, however many employers prefer candidates who currently hold or are working towards a vocational qualification in sterilisation services. Some on-the-job training may be provided.
- Ensure you have up-to-date immunisations and complete relevant checks such as a Police Check.
- Gain experience in a sterilisation services facility under the guidance of an experienced technician.
