What's it like to be a Checkout Operator?
Checkout Operators work in high-volume stores, supermarkets and retail service environments to process payments and transactions. Checkout Operators are required to have good customer service skills and be able to handle cash and electronic payments efficiently.
Tasks and duties
- Weighing, scanning and recording prices of products.
- Receiving and processing payments for goods and services. Payments can be made in various forms, such as cash, cheques, gift vouchers, credit and debit cards and loyalty programs.
- Issuing sales dockets and giving change.
- Maintaining a supply of coins and notes, wrapping, bags and other materials used at the service counter.
- Balancing money received against register sales records.
- Preparing money for banking.
- Administering the store’s operating system to assign weekly specials and other price or quantity variations.
How to become a Checkout Operator
You don’t need any formal qualifications to become a Checkout Operator, but it helps to have a good grasp of arithmetic and strong customer service skills.
- 1.Get on-the-job training as a Checkout Operator to learn the processes and functions of the point-of-sale terminal.
- 2.Consider undertaking formal learning with a Certificate II in Retail Services (SIR20216) at TAFE. This course will teach you how to communicate in a retail environment, as well as how to identify and respond to security risks.
- 3.Alternatively, you can earn a Certificate III in Retail (SIR30216). This course covers working effectively in a service organisation.
