What's it like to be a Clinical Psychologist?
A Clinical Psychologist is a mental health specialist who provides psychological services and support to people with varying mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and drug or alcohol abuse. Clinical Psychologists work in a variety of settings including private practice, hospitals, mental health facilities, community health settings and within the justice system. As well as working in professional practice, some Clinical Psychologists may conduct research, or engage in teaching or supervision of provisional psychologists.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Assessing, diagnosing and understanding people with mental illness and psychological conditions.
- Identifying and diagnosing mental, behavioural or emotional disorders.
- Liaising with clients, their families and other professionals who may be involved in order to provide holistic care.
How to become a Clinical Psychologist
To gain general registration and endorsement to work as a Clinical Psychologist, you must complete six years of study plus two years of supervised practice.
- 1.Undertake a four-year undergraduate sequence in psychology. This could be either a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), or a three-year Bachelor of Psychological Science followed by an accredited fourth year program such as a Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced). Alternatively, if you have already completed an unrelated bachelor degree, you can complete a Graduate Diploma of Psychology, followed by a Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced). The degree you choose must be accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).
- 2.Apply for provisional registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, before completing a further two years of study in an APAC-approved Master of Psychology (Clinical).
- 3.Apply for general registration as a Psychologist. All practising psychologists in Australia must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
- 4.To be eligible for an Area of Practice Endorsement (AoPE) in clinical psychology, you must complete a two-year registrar program which involves supervised professional practice and completion of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
