What's it like to be a Dispensary Assistant?
Dispensary Assistants assist Pharmacists with preparing medications for customers, advising customers on safe and effective use of medicines, and supporting the running of the pharmacy. Dispensary Assistants work under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist to ensure medicines are dispensed legally and safely.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing medications for customers.
- If supplying hospitals, filling stock orders for delivery.
- Creating medicinal compounds.
- Referring complex prescriptions and compounding requests to Pharmacists.
- Attaching dispensation and cautionary labels to medicines.
- Entering customer or patient details into computer for records and labels.
- Carrying out customer service duties, including answering questions, giving advice on products and educating about common health conditions.
- Operating a point-of-sale terminal and EFTPOS machine.
- Cash handling.
- Managing stock inventory.
How to become a Dispensary Assistant
You don’t need formal qualifications to work as a Dispensary Assistant, but they may be advantageous when seeking employment.
- 1.Gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of a Pharmacist or Senior Dispensary Assistant.
- 2.Consider completing a Certificate II In Community Pharmacy (SIR20116) at TAFE.
- 3.Earn a Certificate III in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support (HLT37115) in order to provide general dispensation support in pharmacies, as well as training to be able to provide service to hospital business partners.
- 4.While you work as a Dispensary Assistant you can also consider training to be a Pharmacist in the longer term by completing a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours).
