How to become a Family Support Worker


SEEK Learning
To become a Family Support Worker in Australia, qualifications in community services, social work, social welfare or health are usually required. Positions are available for those with certificate qualifications, but some employers prefer a diploma or bachelor-level qualification.

  1. Complete a qualification in social or community services. This will usually be a Certificate III in Community Services (CHC32015), Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention (CHC40313). Alternatively, complete a Diploma of Community Services (CHC52015), Diploma of Counselling (CHC51015).
  2. Obtain a Working with Children Check, or equivalent. Some organisations may also ask for a National Police Certificate.
  3. Family Support Workers who wish to further their careers can undertake additional qualifications in social work or family therapy.
  4. To gain experience in the industry and to boost your resume, you can also volunteer in Family Services.
