What's it like to be a Grader Operator?
Grader Operators use a grader to spread and level materials on construction sites. Graders are used to build and maintain dirt and gravel access roads and prepare surfaces for asphalt.
Tasks and duties
- Using manual and hydraulic controls on machinery to raise, lower and manoeuvre attachments.
- Selecting, attaching and removing attachments such as buckets, scoops, blades and hammers.
- Following plans, markers and verbal instructions.
- Operating controls to excavate, break, drill, level, compact, gouge, move, load and spread earth, rubble, soil and other materials.
- Following safety protocols.
- Performing minor adjustments and maintenance on plant.
- Lubricating, cleaning and refuelling machinery and positioning it ready for use.
Grader Operators typically work on roadworks and construction projects in industries such as civil engineering, mining and construction. Travelling to stay and work in remote locations is sometimes involved.

You don’t need formal qualifications to work as a Grader Operator, but completion of a Certificate III in Civil Construction may give you an advantage. Tickets and licences may be required to perform certain job activities. Medical checks and drug and alcohol screening are mandatory.
- 1.Gain your construction induction training card (White Card) by completing a short course at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 2.Complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction (RII30920). This may be completed as part of an apprenticeship.
- 3.Complete pre-employment medical and police checks and drug and alcohol screening when required.
- 4.Build your skills and attain licences to operate other types of machinery to strengthen your career options as a skilled, all-round operator.
