What's it like to be an Infrastructure Project Manager?
Infrastructure Project Managers are Project Managers who specialise in the planning, management and execution of Infrastructure projects. They have strong communication and organisational skills, and lead projects in their various stages from conception through to completion.
Tasks and duties
- Leading project planning sessions.
- Coordinating staff and internal resources.
- Managing project progress and adapting work as required.
- Ensuring projects meet deadlines.
- Managing relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Designing, reviewing and submitting contracts.
- Participating in tender processes; design, submission and review.
- Designing risk mitigation plans.
- Conducting project review and collating detailed reports for executive staff.
- Optimising and improving processes.
- Securing growth opportunities and initiating new projects.
- Managing large and diverse teams.
Infrastructure Project Managers oversee factors like integration, scope, timelines, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement for each project. Infrastructure Project Managers specialise in key sectors including energy, water (including waste-water) and waste, transport (including public transport, freight, ports and airports, cycling and walking, roads), education and training, health and human services (including social housing), justice (including courts, police, corrections, emergency services), cultural, civic, sporting, recreational and tourism, science, agriculture and environment, and information and communications technology (ICT).
How to become an Infrastructure Project Manager
In order to operate as an Infrastructure Project Manager in Australia, you need to register with the Australian Business Licence and Information Service (ABLIS). Registration must be renewed annually, and eligibility requires a mixture of practical industry experience and the completion of accredited qualifications. You must also be the holder of a White Card.
- Obtain a White Card. You can apply for a White Card online, and it is mandatory to hold one in order to work on a construction site in Australia.
- Complete a qualification in Construction Project Management from an accredited provider. This could be an Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) (CPC60212), Graduate Diploma of Construction Management, or a Bachelor degree majoring in Construction Management.
- Attain licence from the ABLIS by having the specified educational qualifications plus 2 years of practical experience, complete the application with details of your training, professional memberships, business operations and samples of work, and insurance.
- Renew ABLIS licencing every 12 months.
