To become a teacher in Australia, you’ll need a relevant tertiary degree. These are typically four-year courses, for people over 17 years of age or who have completed year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index. The courses provide a blend of theory and practical teaching experience.
- Complete a bachelor degree in the field of education. This is typically a Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Alternatively, for students with previous tertiary qualifications who have a major and minor in at least two curriculum areas recognised by Australian schools, complete a two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary).
- Before being able to work as a secondary teacher, you need to lodge an application for teacher registration in your state.
- There are many opportunities for career progression for secondary school teachers, such as becoming a special education teacher, leading teacher, assistant principal or principal.
