What's it like to be a Fund Accountant?
A Fund Accountant is a finance professional responsible for the day-to-day accounting for investment portfolios within mutual, institutional and hedge funds or commodities, securities or real estate.
Tasks and duties
- Managing the fund’s cash flow, measuring risk, evaluating fund activity and helping with investor requirements.
- Identify risks and inefficiencies, and create and employ new strategies to improve the fund’s value
- Prepare reports on the fund’s status as required (e.g. quarterly and annually).
Fund Accountants are different from other Accountants because they possess extensive knowledge of investments and the funds market.Fund Accountants are detail-oriented individuals with excellent communication skills who track a fund’s value by collaborating with investors, management, stakeholders and other teams related to the administration of the fund.
How to become a Fund Accountant
To work as a Fund Accountant in Australia, a bachelor degree in the financial field is required, and a Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) qualification is desirable..
- Complete a bachelor degree in the field of accounting. This could be a Bachelor of Accounting or a Bachelor of Business (majoring in Accounting). These are usually three year courses and are open to anyone who is 17 years of age or older and has completed year 12 with the necessary Universities Admission Index.
- Work for three years gathering professional experience in finance, accounting or business and undertake professional development activities each year. Complete a Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting (GradDip CA) or a CPA program.
- Career progression opportunities for fund accountants are numerous and include progressing to a senior role or supervisory position before moving into management.
