    General Manager

Don’t do it. Run away !!!
The good thingsGetting out of there
The challengesWhere do I start. 6 general managers in 2 years in the 5 star hotel. So no more….In my experience, the workplace culture at Ayers Rock Resort was very challenging and overly rigid, inconsistent and top-down. Decision-making was made by a dictating resort general manager that help probation over the heads of employees daily and highly centralised and clicky, with limited opportunity for staff input, which heavily impacted morale and engagement. A large proportion of the workforce is on short-term international contracts, which made it impossible to build a consistent team culture or sense of community. From an employment perspective, I found the environment demanding and, lacking the supportive leadership and cohesion many hospitality professionals value. The head office is in Sydney and switched off from the realities of the resort. Prospective employees……Don’t Do It!!!

If you are running away from possible harm, this may be an option, otherwise, stay where you are,
The good thingsall staff been promised the world, and delivered nothing, so we all in the same boat, staff are nice.
The challengesthe way you are treated due to your visa status, the uneducated management, the cronyism amongst management, and the disregard for human life in general.

The challengesManagement with zero support. And no introduction to the roll. Arrogant managers. I was left on my own.

Though the role I ended up performing differed from the one I was offered and was affected by disorganised management, it has been a unique experience in a stunning location with friendly colleagues.
The good thingsIt’s a unique and beautiful place to work, with friendly colleagues who make the environment welcoming and supportive.
The challengesThe hiring process was unclear, with promises made during recruitment not reflected in the role I was given. Combined with disorganised management, it has made it difficult to perform at my full potential. The initial job I was offered and the role I ended up performing were not the same, which created a mismatch between my skills and the work assigned.

Voyages is a supportive company that also works closely to its values. There are also lots of opportunities for team building and monthly celebrations.
The good thingsSupported by Senior Management and opportunities for career growth.
The challengesAdjusting to different personalities and ways of working but there is always respect even with differences in opinions.

    Fun while it lasted.
The good thingsMet some friends there in 2008 that we are still great friends with today. Accommodation was good because we were in the managers Accommodation due to my wife's job position. Good discounts on the restaurants for being a employee.
The challengesRemote and the heat are the biggest issues. Be prepared to be isolated in the town for months at a time and then when you do get away you get to go to Alice Springs as it is the closest town to Yulara which is around 5-6 hrs away. Been trying to get back there since we left but can never get anyone to make contact with us. Have rang the HR department directly and never get a response. They reckon they are desperate to get employees but with my wife being a Electrical Mechanic and myself being previously employed in the waste services division and more recently doing interstate MC work for the past 5 years apparently that's not good enough to get a look in there.

perfect for a young person trying to save up while building a hospitality experience. Dont go just to explore as you will get bored pretty soon, if you have a goal you will most definitely reach it there.
The good thingsPeace and Quite, you can save alot as there is not many options to spend your money on, plenty of room to grow as the place is very remote and any opportunity is urs to take
The challengesThe remoteness of the place, not being able to get your usual food and drinks. Expensive IGA and food options. small community. challenges: Hopping mice and flies files flies, people warned us about the flies but it was way more than we expected. Working extended hours with no extra pay for managers.

It was an experience that made me learn fast because the company push you to work a lot. There is no recognition.
The good thingsThe location of the Sydney office and helping the aboriginal community to find employment.
The challengesThere is no proper training, the management blames others, the HR team lacked structure and good role models. No recognition, no motivation from managers.

I've learned a lot in my first years but the last year was a stack of disappointments driven by new management who didn't know how to handle such a diverse environment.
The good thingsBeautiful area to live in. If you're committed to work you can progress quickly from front line positions as retention is very high
The challengesAfter change of CEO, company lost the direction. There's no job security. People are promoted based on how well they follow orders. 3 restructurisactions in one year!!!
