Directorate does not reward experience outside of ACT public schools or higher qualifications, whilst a Master of education in special education is valued in Victoria, hardly given much credence, lots of talk of the value of inclusive Ed but little respect or value given
The good thingsSeeing student success , that believed they couldn’t
The challengesLeadership that fails to recognise success, only via data sets, and is not interested in only set directives from higher up.

Very challenging teaching/ learning environments and cultures...with leadership that is ineffective and lacks humility.
The good thingsThe kids and being able to support their learning despite all the challenges you face daily.
The challengesThe cliques in schools who move together look after each other's backs. If you are not in these cliques, have no personal connections to these cliques and friendship groups, are new, an outsider - you have no future in the whole system. Very challenging teaching, learning environments and cultures. Leadership & management play politics that make you aware/remember that it is a privilege to work at your employer’s place of business and that privilege can be influenced, changed or removed (especially if you are on probation or contract) at any time.

Teaching is harder every year, it costs you everything
The good thingsThe stand down and high level of personal leave paid to employees, the educational training opportunities, salary is competitive
The challengesIf you are not in the clique in schools (who you know), its likely that your career will go no where, the workload is so excessive that you lose personal time and balance, occupational v is a real issue, inept leadership in schools

Welcoming warm people! I wish I could have stayed
The good thingsWonderful people to work with, as a contractor I felt very welcome! Great leadership and the best records management I have seen in my career. My supervisor was the perfect balance of professional yet relaxed. I really enjoy working for people with a strong sense of leadership. At the Education and Training Directorate there are a lot of teachers working there and I met many that used to teach at the schools I attended. They were all very supportive of the next direction I wanted my career to go and they were helpful and informative- no surprises there as they used to be teachers!
The challengesHaving my log-in set up by Shared Services when I started was a challenge as I had to wait several weeks to get access to the things I wanted. The director I was providing support to was retiring so it was hard to gauge what style of support would benefit them the most.
