Early hands on experience available, excellent workplace, skilled lawyers.
The good thingsI worked mainly in employment law on unfair dismissal and general protections matters. It was a rewarding role because I got early exposure to client interviews and real responsibility in carrying matters through from start to finish. I worked with a very experienced senior associate and learned a lot from that.
The challengesFirst couple of times in conciliation and appearing at fair work commission can be stressful but rewarding...when I eventually got it right.

Niche and boutique firm offering a balanced start to my legal career.
The good thingsI started as a clerk here and then was offered a permanent position after graduating from law school. Very interesting and specialised work in banking regulation, with good exposure to foreign bank clients, AML/CTF and APRA matters. The principal lawyer was knowledgeable, respectful and easy to work with, and the role provided a good opportunity to develop practical skills in a niche area.
The challengesThe main challenge was getting across a fairly technical and specialised regulatory area, but it was a great opportunity to learn and develop in banking and finance work.

Commercial property work across transactions, due diligence and lease matters.
The good thingsI worked in property, focusing on commercial property acquisitions and sales (occasional residential property), due diligence, lease reviews linked to commercial property matters and some property work for the firm's banking clients. It was a good place to gain broad and practical experience in this area, with strong knowledge across the team and a good standard of work. The staff were friendly and supportive, there was a healthy level of trust and autonomy, and the firm managed working hours well without creating an unnecessary burnout culture. My supervising director was a fountain of knowledge and supported me when I had gaps in knowledge or experience.
The challengesLike most property roles, there were periods where multiple acquisitions, sales and lease matters overlapped, which meant managing competing deadlines and priorities.

A supportive and well-run firm with strong expertise, friendly staff, reasonable hours
The good thingsReally enjoyed working here as a lawyer. The team was friendly, approachable and easy to get along with, and there was a strong depth of knowledge across the firm’s practice areas in Sydney, especially in employment law and commercial/commercial litigation. It was a good place to learn and build experience. The hours were also very reasonable for legal practice and there was a genuine effort to make sure staff were not overworked or burnt out. I also appreciated that there was no unnecessary micromanagement - you were trusted to do your job well.
The challengesAs with most legal roles, the work can be demanding at times when deadlines clustered or urgent matters came in. Because the firm gave lawyers a good level of autonomy, it also required you to be organised and take responsibility for managing your own files. Not the best place to work if you're not organised. Being a smaller firm also, there are limited prospects for career development so it's not a "climb the ladder" sweatshop type of firm.

The good thingsLoved my supervisor, she was the most encouraging person. Trusting team and great atmosphere
The challengesToo much admin however I guess that is law and not necessarily the job

Great place to cut your teeth. Friendly and knowledgeable.
The good thingsExcellent place to get your feet wet. The work was fair paced but hours were good. Usually out of office by 5:30pm to 6pm. My supervising director is knowledgeable, has been in industry for a long time. I was able to always get the attention and supervision I needed in the early days. I enjoyed working with my fellow lawyers.
The challengesThere is no secretarial support. They have accounts and administration but dedicated secretary is not possible.

No pain no gain (or salary). Take this if you can't start anywhere better.
The good thingsIf you want to get into law, you have to start at the bottom of the ladder. In this analogy, Berrigan Doube is the little rubbery feet underneath the bottom rung.
The challengesRetaining any hope for the legal world until you get a better job, which WILL happen. Zero real supervision or experienced staff here, you have to develop yourself...or sink.

Great starting role where you can develop your skills.
The good thingsLots of autonomy and opportunities to learn new areas of practice. Good collegiate attitude among staff.
The challengesNo real room for advancement. Salary not representative of the level of work and responsibility.
