Don’t question them or you will be treated badly and there is no help no matter who you go to.
The good thingsThe work could have been good.
The challengesSafety, work ethic, realise it’s not a retail store.

Some good memories but all that glitters is not gold.
The good thingsSafety culture, reasonably well kept equipment, ideas are sometimes listened to
The challengesPay was not great, lack of transparency from leadership pitted divisions against each other and turned people off from joining the business. Lots of talk about progression and upskilling but strategic people relationships and "yes man" attitude was the key to promotion. Has been a bit less HR nepotism in more recent years but they have some entrenched management who struck good pay deals and are there to retire.

Rubbish place to work with useless management.
The good thingsThe work in the early part of my employment
The challengesPaying overtime, management, communication, employ people who actually know what they are doing, recognition of your work, lying from management, the list goes on. Would never recommend my worst enemy to work there.

Single handedly the worst experience of my life.
The good thingsWFH was available full-time when I joined the company. The old bosses allowed for life outside of work to happen without breathing down your neck. But I heard that has changed quite a bit since I left. I enjoyed some co-workers who had spent a long time at the organisation.
The challengesManagement. It was the utmost abhorrent display of behaviour I have ever witnessed in my entire career. And HR only make it worse. The culture they love to rave on about is non-existent. If you 'Speak Up' get ready to pack your things because you will be forced out quicker than you can comprehend fully what has just happened to you. Truly, everlasting trauma from working at this organisation.

Complacent staff can spend years at the company and they are not seen as threat to long term middle and upper management . A blind eye to some staff on performance and behaviors and selective and aggressive application of some HR policies to a small number who speak up or challenge status quo.
The good thingssecure employment and salary sacrifice and work from home
The challengesAppalling misalignment of corporate values as stated on websites sites and reality of poor line management ,performance management and inconsistent application of HR policy

If you need a Flexible Work Arrangement, get it written into your contract or refer to the Fair Work Act (2009) and apply through the Fair Work Commission. BlueScope over-complicates and oversells its Bflex Flexible Working offer. In practice, your arrangement is at the behest of your manager.
The good thingsA flexible work arrangement was advertised and offered to me for 14 months.
The challengesMy flexible work arrangement was discontinued and forced my resignation. I would never have applied for the job if I knew they meant ‘flexibility ends after 14 months’. Their defence was, “you didn’t get it in writing” even though I asked my manager multiple times. Felt quite betrayed.

The culture this place was historically known for is dwindling at a rapid rate because of the ageing workforce that passionately keeps alive some of the most archaic ideas I have ever seen in my career.
The good thingsThe customers that could actually identify the hard workers in the business that continuously praised and thanked me for my work (my boss could never bring herself to do that). And LEAVING!
The challengesAtrocious staff retention strategies, disgusting 70's-style office drone culture, zero regard for work/life balance. Appalling pay, departments pitted against each other, supes start EVERY DAY with a blame game catchup where they complain about their own staff and management are pro gaslighters.

Confusing, frustrating but still a very good place to work.
The good thingsthe good things about Bluescope steel was the money that you could earn the bonding of the four different crews that l worked on over the thirty three years l worked there.
The challengesthe biggest challenges of working for Bluescope steel was that as a coach l had a big part in training new starters to bluescope's bonds and beliefs. Management never really listen to the production operators who only wanted to help with better productivity, safety, NPFT,

Overall I have enjoyed working for BlueScope, would recommend.
The good thingsThe people at BlueScope really make it a good place to work. My team were very helpful and understanding. My manager was a good person and made a lot of time for me to succeed in my role.
The challengesHard to make changes within the business as management are all the older demographic and don't understand how technology will improve their lives. Some of the business processes are very manual and can become frustrating.
