Poor management, too much focus on expanding as an organisation, severe lack of supportThe good thingsSome great training opportunities are available and there really is a lot of diversity within the organisation. Worked with some really passionate people who were dedicated to their role.
The challengesThere seems to be a really confused and disjointed understanding towards peer work within the organisation. Severe lack of supports, no network, no real plans for peer workers beyond offering cadetships. Was definitely mislead in the interview process that there was plenty on offer but in actuality, there was nothing to be seen. Had to constantly pursue external sources for peer related supports. As a workforce recommendation resulting from the Royal commission, I was surprised that a “leading” community service gave no notice to their peer workers. There is a culture of peer workers burning out quickly and leaving, either to be immediately replaced or their jobs being removed entirely. After flagging my concerns many times over, I was told this was the culture of the organisation and it wasn’t likely to change any time soon so I left. The lack of advocacy and support from management is a real problem and will be for some time.
