Do not work in People and Culture .. ironically a culture of intimidation and silence
The good thingsSupporting the business units and faculties
The challengesPeople and culture has a well established culture of intimidation and intimidation.. it’s not in all areas but many in senior management stay silent

    Misarable place to work
The good thingsEasy parking. Some people are professional.
The challengesManagement has no drive towards result, just self-gratification. Toxic long-term employees, gossip, envy of everything, entitlement based on how many years they worked. Micro management.

The challengesThe workload can be demanding at times, but the colleagues you work with make it manageable.

One massive learning curve in what not to do.
The good thingsTo their credit, the campus ammentities available are good.
The challengesIf you're more preoccupied with appearances, with "looking" good, love toxic gossip and rumour, love deceitful behaviour, love wasting endless months on work and rework and love a flashy meaningless "strategy" document, then Curtin is the place for you. On the other hand, if your focussed on results, impact, teamwork and meaningful collabortation, if you're focussed on an environemt with strong leadership and want to feel empowered in your role... I'd think very carefully before applying to work at Curtin.

    a happy workplace
The good thingsInspiring and supportive environment. Great commute, depending on where you live. Loads of flexibility and freedom, which goes along with a demanding work pressure, so it balances out.
The challengesInternal politics can play their part on moving things forward, but this happens in most organisations.

With more funding and job-stability for academics, this could be a good place to work.
The good thingsThe students are often highly motivated. The tertiary teaching content can be quite interesting compared to other education levels, and it looks good on your resumé. The campus is a nice place (though finding time to enjoy it can be a challenge).
The challengesLittle or no long-term prospects; casual you start and casual you stay (if you're lucky). Underemployment through reduced hours is also common even if you want full-time and have had it before. Staying a long time doesn't seem to change this fact. Atmosphere among staff can be quite aloof and cold, which is maybe inevitable given the high turnover of casual lecturers. Perhaps most importantly, casual pay rates do not correspond to actual rates; there can be a lot of work that you're told should fit into the working day that inevitably becomes after hours work and weekend work, particularly at choke points in semesters. This is not reflected in pay; money seems to be tight and a lot of things are done off-the-cuff to avoid paid hours of training. You need to do a lot in your own time and this undermines work-life balance significantly and giving students the support they deserve becomes a personal sacrifice rather than a professional task.

The challengesNo career progression within Finance, reluctance to change, attitudes to funding and spending of government money

I have enjoyed working with the Team at Curtin
The good thingsGreat Balance for family. Team mentality is awesome and a place where you can be an adult and be responsible for yourself. Very refreshing to work with the team at Curtin University
The challengesNormal day to day company and promotion opportunities but this is everywhere. Unfortunately pay for Professional and General staff in trades roles is not as competitive to the market but the balance it provides definitely outweighs this issue to me.

Tertiary Education Sector in Australia is broken and Curtin has taken the most hit in Western Australia due to their short sited leadership that kept kept several staff under short term contracts and many skilled professionals were made redundant throughout the years.
The good thingsFreedom to work on different ideas Flexible work
The challengesExtreme workload Cash mongering manangement Poor management and leadership Short term contracts and no job security
