Digital Project Manager - Digital Teaching & Learning Portfolio
    Apr 2025
Melbourne VIC 30001 to 2 years in the role, former employee
Good place to be exposed to technology delivery for the Australian education sector (state and federal agencies).
The good thingsA purpose driven culture, non-profit benefits (salary sacrificing if you use it). Genuinely friendly and decent colleagues who want to further education opportunities for Australians.
The challengesFunding constrained, being a non-profit some decisions can seem rather short-termist (eg. only focussing on the funded work, rather than longer term roadmap).

ESA - avoid if you can
The good thingsGood colleagues. Interesting work.
The challengesTerrible management. Run like a dysfunctional family business, rather than a ministerial company. No enterprise agreement or HR procedures. Expect your salary to stay static, no opportunities for advancement. Regular retrenchments. Avoid.

ESA was good to me. I learnt lots, worked with some knowledgable people and lots of lovely people.
The good thingsMany projects had large budgets so there was time available to build good quality software. Projects usually had all the required roles: PM, BA, UI/UX, Devs, Testers.
The challengesBeing a government company there was a lot of bureaucracy and things often moved very slowly.

Great for what I needed at the time.
The good thingsWork life balance was fantastic, opportunities for progression great, as long as half the company doesn't get made redundant in one day.
The challengesPay not great, every time there's a change of government people get made redundant.

ESA and the people I met there are a valued part of my professional experience.
The good thingsThe best thing, of course, was the people. They were intelligent, dedicated, interesting and sociable – and lots of them are still friends. We also had interesting and worthwhile projects to work on, and a very supportive environment with middle management.
The challengesLike most organisations, there was a lot of pressure at times to meet deadlines and budget constraints. New management saw restructuring and redundancies, and projects were less well resourced.

Great people, but difficult business structure to work in.
The good thingsESA attracts some very talented people who are fantastic to work with. There are a variety of projects worked on at any given time, allowing exposure to different teams, approaches and technologies.
The challengesESA seems to continually recruit more slowly then needed, so that teams are continually short staffed, putting pressure on other team members to try to cover the tasks of unfilled positions as well as their own roles. The majority of projects are state or federal government funded, so positons are only as secure as the funding supporting the project.

huge potential to make positive change, wasted and bogged down by politics.
The good thingsLots of talented people to work with, lots of opportunity to do things that would make a huge difference to society.
The challengesvery siloed organization, poor internal communications, lots and lots of internal politics. Working with many levels of government, lack of certainty about project funding due to political nature of stakeholders. Very risk averse.
