    GLOBAL here we come !
The good thingsWhat haven't I enjoyed is the real question...... Great People Great Team Incredible leaders that have walked the walk Last week - I mentioned to our GM that we are awfully spoilt and was grateful for the opportunities and experiences they were providing, his response " so you should be ". FCBT - have made me feel like an extension of their family.
The challengesLike anything everyone has their own experiences. I we are in a fast-paced sales role - personally I love it - Flight Centre Business Travel put ALOT of work into their novices and expectation is that we deliver. High performing sales teams will usually always encounter growth so ensuring that our personal motivations and organizational goals are aligned and ensuring tasks and targets are attainable. Our team is relatively new and with that comes many moving parts for our leaders at all levels. I would say the biggest challenge is ensuring, we do what we can, to support the leaders and the team. Creating portfolios from scratch is a challenge though also so rewarding to us and the business.

Great place to start in travel, difficult to sustain long term due to low pay & toxic culture.
The good thingsFlight Centre provides great opportunities for people with no prior experience to enter the travel industry and build a career. Due to high staff turnover, there are frequent opportunities for new starters to enter the industry. The training program is extensive, and the trainers are supportive and knowledgeable. New staff gain strong skills in sales, customer service, problem solving, and travel systems, which provides a solid foundation for a career in the industry.
The challengesThe company culture feels toxic and very top-down, with decisions made at the top and pushed down through management to store level. Each level is expected to put a positive spin on decisions because their income depends on team performance, which leaves room manipulation. The base salary is minimum wage, so staff rely heavily on incentives, which leads to long hours and constant pressure to sell more. “Uncapped earning potential” really means you must overwork to earn a liveable income. Staff are pushed to add as many components as possible to bookings to hit bonuses, which can feel disingenuous & unethical to clients. Team Leaders track and present KPIs daily in front of teams, creating pressure and unhealthy competition. Leaders are measured on profit, not staff retention, which says a lot about company priorities and culture. Top performers are posted daily across the state, reinforcing a culture of constant comparison, pressure, burnout, and high staff turnover.

FCTG launched my career straight out of university, & I've gained & fallen in love with the company.
The good thingsI originally worked for Flight Centre in Canberra, as a retail travel consultant back in 2003. Since that time I have worked as a retail travel consultant, a team leader, an area trainer, and a corporate travel manager in both a day time team and in the emergency after hours department. I love the leadership, team, clients and the work. I love how fun the company (there isn't another organisation that comes close) is and how they strive to recognise hard work, achievement and are invested in us as individuals.
The challengesFCTG remuneration is built on incentivisation. You get out of it what you put in. This has at times resulted in some interpersonal conflict amongst team members. I have found it best to clarify the rules and stick to that. Then your team leader trusts your integrity and they are better equipped to navigate tricky situations. I have worked for other similar organisations. The pay ends up being a lot less (by about a third in my experience). And so I do like the incentivization, but you have to be wise, humble, and not grabby nor accusatory.

Where a love of travel can turn into a real career
The good thingsStrong team culture with lots of support and opportunities to learn. There are great career pathways for people who are motivated and passionate about travel, and the opportunity to specialise in areas of travel you enjoy and build real expertise.
The challengesLike most retail environments, it can be fast paced and requires strong time management and organisation, particularly during busy travel periods.

Pre COVID, one of the most rewarding careers you could hope for. Post - I’m broken
The good thingsMostly fun culture, ample opportunity for career development
The challengesTraining. The desperation to put bums on seats is ridiculous post COVID. Training is not adequate. Screening is deplorable. Ability to do the job is not considered

Resignations galore and many stressed tears sessions. Not a clique I'd subscribe to for career growth
The good thingsThey once a year big EFY party and the opportunity to go to the global conference.
The challengesTerrible on boarding, not duty of care for staff, managers who are too green and incapable of being human, culture of working 60hrs a week and Executive management don't care as long as you get "it" done. No planning and lack of correct skills for roles for large projects that blame you for their demise. On the surface people are nice but extremely stressed or chaotic. Many people came up through the ranks as travel consultants and no real life experience in doing best practice of anything. Very FCTG centric culture that makes you feel like its a clique you will never subscribe to.

If you like cults, flight centre is for you
The good thingsThe fact that they send their staff to a music festival every year would be a positive
The challengesThe onboarding post-covid has gone significantly downhill, with no support offered when you start in store. I hope you enjoy parting people from more money than they need to pay, and enjoy working an average of 15 hours unpaid overtime every week. It's frowned on to arrive or leave on time, you clean the store (including the bathroom!) and are expected to socialise. Buy into the cult or get the heck out.

Storefront to Luxury - What a Ride!
The good thingsSince starting with FCTG in 2013, I’ve grown from a travel consultant to leadership roles in the luxury space, supported by extensive training in sales, product, and leadership. What I love most is the dynamic nature of the work -every day brings new challenges and opportunities to create unforgettable travel experiences. I’ve also had amazing opportunities to explore the world myself, which keeps my passion alive. Recently, I launched a new brand within FCTG, linked to Travel Associates, opening up exciting opportunities for innovation. This is a sales-driven role, and success comes from building your own business and brand. The culture is supportive, growth-focused, and full of passionate people.
The challengesLike any role in travel and sales, there are definitely challenges - especially in the early stages when you're building your client base and learning the systems. It takes persistence, adaptability, and a strong work ethic to succeed. Once you find your rhythm, the rewards far outweigh the tough moments.

Being able to support the retail Team Leaders and see them grow and engage in rostering system is very rewarding. Seeing the progress firsthand makes the challenges worth it.
The good thingsWhat I love most about my 17yr career with Flight Centre is being about to move around and build on my skills with the company.
The challengesSetting boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, no matter the career. Working on this over the years, has helped me and my family present both at home and at work.
