Less than 1 year in the role, former employee

I loved the environment at Kolbe. The staff were welcoming and helpful and in a job that can be very stressful, having a supportive team around you is crucial. The students were sometimes challenging but very genuine and I found most to be quite appreciat

The good thingsThe staff are very good at sharing advice and resources which made it a really welcoming place for a Graduate teacher. Also every Friday after school there were be chips and drinks in the staff room so everyone could have a chat and debrief about their week.

The challengesThere were a lot of students who came from a background where English was not their first language so sometimes you needed to really modify work and tasks to make it more suitable for them. This is very important however it could also be quite time-consuming.

The good thingsGreat friendly staff Some lovely new buildings New principal making a huge and positive impact

The challengesAt the time I was there: Staff were highly micromanaged There was no self-care for staff Discipline was tough with uniform but not much else and turned a blind eye to serious repeat behaviours Arts was treated as a child-minding subject with very little investment in developing student self-expression through drama, dance or music and there was the expectation of 18 or more students in senior (Year 11 or 12) performing arts classes (!)- so they did not run because they would never get that number Large Chaldean population with refugee background - should be offering an Arabic language - to be more global but leadership afraid to embrace this suggestion Need to show more respect to women teachers
