Avoid at all costs, you will be treated as less than human.
The good thingsThe only good thing to come out of working there were the bonds of friendship forged during the constant adversity.
The challengesWe are in the digital age where people are able to get concise, daily news about the performance of the company and the constant backlash it faces from it's awful business practices. As a manager you will work 40 hours a week in store and countless hours outside of it. The ship is run so tight that you will not have time to adequately train your staff on everything they need to cover - which is absolutely everything involved in the store since most of them are run with a single person at a time. You will not have staff to cover sick calls/emergencies because you cannot offer enough hours in the week to retain a healthy roster to begin with. You will get phone calls every single day regarding simple operations of the store because again, your staff are only able to work a few days a week because that's all you're allowed to give them, and you will not be able to effectively communicate daily changes. You are forced to act like the owner of the store but with no share in the profits.

Please look for a job elsewhere
The good thingsThere was good things?
The challengesHaving a store manager who think he is better than everyone else and can do no wrong. Upper management not caring about multiple reports from multiple team members about the manager that would result in instant dismissal. workload does not justify the pay. unfair KPI expectations that you get told off about that are not even in your control, Do not care about staff work/life balance or burnout. do not work here. you are just a number on a payroll system with no value to the company

good in the beginning but as you work longer, the more responsibilities you get and eventually, the pay doesn't equal the workload
The good thingsThe regulars, you get to know them and have some good
The challengesalot of heavy lifting, the mystery shops are difficult since you have a whole store to look after and other customers needing your attention, inconsistent hours and last minute rostering, pressure to take last minute shifts at nearby stores, the THEFTS - making you feel unsafe, alcoholics

The challengesbigger workload than you would expect, alot of heavy lifting, unrealistic expecations from management who care more about making profits than their staff's wellbeing, inconsistent hours and last minute rostering, pressure to take last minute shifts at nearby stores, not feeling valued or respected, creepy old men, alcoholics, depressing work environment, demotivating

Not a bad company, but better planning and structuring could benefit everyone, especially flexibility and intelligence coming from the general managers/corporate down at Melbourne.
The good thingsHonestly? I like my manager and some of the people I work with. In addition, I enjoy this line of work and meeting new people. The job variety and various tasks can make the job interesting.
The challengesMore often than not, a lack of poor planning and high staff turnovers can lead to shortages that put a strain on workers (who are often expected to drop everything on their days off and just go to work), resulting in a poor work life balance. There are times when I've had to work 14 days straight. :-( Not always trained properly on how to do the job and can be thrown in the deep end without any support. Corporate management are out of touch and disconnected from the realities of their store employees (especially the ones down at Melbourne), passing and enforcing poorly thought out policies that make no sense. Would be nice if they listened to their stores and either reduce hours temporarily or even just close a store or two to alleviate pressure because of shortage... Better disclosure needs to be provided to customers advising on what store policies are regarding products. Quite tired of having to argue with customers.

The good thingsEnjoy providing sales of alcohol to responsible customers and making sure the stocks are always available.
The challengesSometimes the shift work becomes very long when working the 6pm to midnight shift in Beaconsfield, because I live 40 minutes away in Kwinana.

Great for experience however too much stress to be a long term gig.
The good thingsGetting your foot in the door is pretty easy, such a great stepping stone if you want to further your career.
The challengesNo support from upper management - super dismissive of your struggles and they will throw you in the deep end with barely any training. Bare minimum hours, staff that don't want to work (stores constantly SCREAMING out for staff to cover shifts). Too much of an emphasis in "store standards" and not practicality. Crazy amounts of paperwork.

My absolute favourite job .... EVER!
The good thingsI have worked for the company over 2 years. From the very beginning I have LOVED my job. From working 21hrs a fortnight as a casual through to currently working 40hrs a week as a store manager. There is always a competition, or surveys to get free or highly reduced products. For the most part, the staff are great. As a casual, the hours are flexible and swapping shifts is normally pretty easy if required. The pay is pretty good as well! Heaps of training on the job as well as online. There are required modules every month that for the most part are common sense based.
The challengesearly morning delivery starts (depending on the store). Sometimes rude customers. The older stores have older computers which to be quite honest - belong in a museum.
