A supportive, forward thinking and people focused place to work. Like a second family. The good thingsI enjoyed my 6 years at MBQ because of the people i worked with, the members i was able to help and the support i received from the leadership team when i needed it. i made lifelong friends and colleagues, i was challenged in my role, i felt valued, and when i had any issues i was listened to. The only reason i left was to expand my skills into a different industry after 20 years working in construction.
In the last 3 years of my tenure, i felt that the organisation was making great shifts to properly manage any behaviour or cultural issues that arise as a normal part of business, especially during challenging times like covid. They made a strong commitment to putting more focus into people and culture. They employed a properly skilled and experienced people and culture manager, and started looking to their people for strategy and feedback. This was the best move the business made in my tenure, and improving teams (even if difficult decisions had to be made) was something they really started to excel at and should be proud of. Cultural change is a big challenge for a business because not everyone will want to be on the journey or remain on it.
I've noticed some disappointing reviews here, i guess there is discomfort in being challenged to make the workplace a more functional and happier place to work... these types of conversations will mean people either change with the organisation or choose to defy the shift and move on. They can choose to be part of the solution or acknowledge they were part of the problem, and i guess that means sometimes people will be unhappy no matter what.
I will always look at my time at MBQ favourably and would recommend it to anyone. Maybe one day I will return.... many others have over the years.
The challenges
None within the workplace itself.
But the industrial environment within the broader industry can be challenging especially when dealing with tripartite issues, however I was always given sound guidance on how to manage this part of my role.
